Copyright for Libraries

In this engaging inaugural webinar of the IP4OS Masterclass series, Eliana Zatschler from IP4OS consortium partner Miller International Knowledge introduces Chris Morrison, Head of Copyright and Licensing at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford. Chris, a leading expert on copyright literacy, took the audience on a lively exploration of the intersection between copyright, libraries, and open science. He shared insights from his work, including playful and critical approaches to copyright education through tools like “Copyright the Card Game” and “The Publishing Trap.” These initiatives empower academics and librarians to make informed, ethical decisions about copyright by encouraging risk-balanced, creative thinking rather than rigid rule-following.

Chris highlighted the concept of “copyright literacy”, not just knowledge of the law, but the ability to navigate its complexities in real-world academic and research contexts. He emphasised the importance of embracing uncertainty and avoiding unhelpful binaries such as “commercial vs. non-commercial” or “open vs. closed.” The session also touched on current policy challenges, like AI and copyright in the UK, and how projects like IP4OS can help bridge gaps between innovation, legal compliance, and openness.

Chris advocates for entrepreneurial thinking in libraries and research institutions, reinforcing their vital role in shaping sustainable, open knowledge ecosystems across Europe and beyond. Watch the webinar in its entirety to hear all about his expertise.
